Motability is a charity that oversees the Motability Scheme. Currently the Scheme has more than 650,000 customers and helps disabled people, their families and carers lease a new car, powered wheelchair or mobility scooter using their disability benefit. Motability was founded in 1977 and since its creation has seen over three million cars, mobility scooters and powerchairs provided to help people with their mobility needs.

The Motability Scheme is a Scheme that is designed to get people who need assisted mobility mobile by exchanging their higher rate mobility allowance to lease a new affordable car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle or a scooter / powered wheelchair. This Scheme is designed to be simple and easy whilst also including insurance, servicing and maintenance as well as breakdown cover being included.

The Motability Scheme works by allowing anyone that is in receipt of a higher rate mobility allowance to use their allowance to lease a new affordable car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle or a scooter / powered wheelchair. The Scheme is designed to provide you with a stress-free and simple way to access a brand new reliable vehicle of your choice to help with your mobility needs and requirements.

Any one who receives higher rate mobility allowance (Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment or the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance for example.)  Those in receipt of War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement & Armed Forces Independence Payment are also able to qualify for Motability and use their allowance to lease a new affordable car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle or a scooter / powered wheelchair.

You are able to check if you are eligible using the eligibility checker on the Motability website. If you are in receipt of the DLA, PIP, WPMS or AFIP and have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance when you apply then you are able to qualify for the Motability scheme. This will allow you to lease your Motability vehicle.
