How Does the Motability Scheme Work?

Anyone in receipt of a higher rate mobility allowance is permitted to use their mobility allowance to lease a scooter or powered wheelchair as well as a car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. This is designed to provide flexible and hassle free access to a mobility vehicle of your choice to help you get around and giving you greater freedom in life. The payments are deducted from your higher rate mobility allowance every 4 weeks and then is paid directly by the DWP (department of work and pensions)

At Care Plus Mobility, we are Motability Accredited and can help you lease your new scooter or powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme. We will work closely with you to support you in achieving greater independence and to provide simple, hassle free access to the Motability powered wheelchair or scooter of your choice. We will also discuss your requirements to suggest a powered wheelchair or scooter that suits your needs to the letter.

What Types of Allowances Can Be Used for the Scheme?

The following allowances can be used for the Motability Scheme to allow you to lease a new powered wheelchair or new scooter every 3 years.

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

Please note – Attendance Allowance cannot be used for the Motability Scheme.

Choosing a Powered Wheelchair

Identifying your needs is highly important when choosing your new powered wheelchair. It is highly advised to seek the assessment of a medical professional who can help you identify your needs and what you may require from your new powered wheelchair. Should you not require a medical assessment – it is still highly important to consider your needs.

You will need to assess personal factors such as your mobility, posture, balance, sight, cognitive ability, body height & weight as well as other factors. Our friendly team of experts can also help you to choose the perfect powered wheelchair to suit your needs.

Choosing a New Mobility Scooter

If your ability to walk fairly long distances is deteriorating over time then a new mobility scooter may be perfectly suited to you. Similarly to choosing a powered wheelchair, you will also need to assess your requirements and consider your mobility, posture, balance, body weight, sight, perception & tolerance before choosing your new mobility scooter. It’s also important to bear in mind that you still will need to travel short distances to stay active – so this is an additional point to consider when looking for a scooter.
